Seizures after a subarachnoid haemorrhage: Julie's story

01 November 2011

In a new patient perspective article, Julie describes how she started to experience seizures following a subarachnoid haemorrhage.

During her recovery, Julie had problems with her speech, memory and concentration.

Seven months after the operation to coil her ruptured brain aneurysm, Julie began experiencing regular seizures. Although she is now on anti-epileptic drugs, her seizures have continued, characterised by speech problems.

"I had always thought that epilepsy was a condition where someone dropped to the ground shaking and was associated with strobe lighting," says Julie. "I didn’t know that seizures can take many forms."

But despite the seizures, Julie says: "Life is good. My husband has been brilliantly supportive. I can do most of the things which I used to do but I am careful not to push myself too hard."

Do you have epilepsy? We are looking for more patient perspectives on living with seizures, or from people who are now controlling their epilepsy. If you'd like to tell your story, email catherine.bowden@brainandspine.org.uk - we'd love to hear from you.
