Looking for reliable medical information? This website is certified by the Health on the Net Foundation

10 September 2010

The Brain and Spine Foundation website has been certified for the second time as a reliable source of medical information by the Health on the Net Foundation.

What does this certification mean? Well, Health on the Net (HON for short) is a Swiss non-governmental organisation that was set up to improve the quality of online health information for both patients and medical professionals.

Health websites that comply with the HON code of conduct display a logo to show that they are HONcode compliant. This means that they have:

  • Authority (Giving the qualifications of the site authors)

  • Complementarity (Information to support, not replace the advice of your medical practitioner)

  • Confidentiality (Respecting the privacy of site users)

  • Attribution (Citing the sources and dates of medical information)

  • Justifiability (Ability to back claims)

  • Transparency (Accessibility, providing valid contact details)

  • Financial disclosure (Providing details of funding)

  • Advertising policy (Clearly distinguishing advertising from editorial content. The Brain and Spine Foundation does not carry ANY advertising).

The HONcode is the most widely accepted reference for online health and medical publishers. Currently it is used by over 7,300 certified websites, with more than 10 million pages, covering 102 countries.
