Helping professionals communicate with older people who have neurological conditions

26 November 2009

A new Brain and Spine Foundation pilot training course will help health and social care professionals communicate effectively with older people with neurological conditions.

The training course is being piloted in the Primary Care Trust areas listed below and has been endorsed by the Royal College of Nursing and the College of Occupational Therapists. It has been designed to meet the communication needs of both older people with neurological conditions, and the professionals who work with them.

Older people who took part in our focus groups wanted to see an improvement in the professionals’ ability to use verbal and non verbal communication. They also emphasised the importance of being treated as an individual, with dignity and respect.

Professionals have also expressed great interest and motivation in receiving more training and utilising different methods to communicate with their patients/clients or residents. They felt that better communication does lead to better care.

If you are a health or social care professional based in one of the pilot areas of Hampshire, Medway, Surrey, Sutton and Merton and West Kent Primary Care Trusts and would like to take part in the training, see our Communication Skills Project page for more information.
