New patient information on dizziness and balance

11 November 2009

Dizziness booklet A new booklet on dizziness and balance was launched today by the Brain & Spine Foundation, a charity providing expert medical information to people affected by neurological disorders. The booklet is accompanied by a factsheet on vestibular rehabilitation exercises.

Dizziness and balance problems can be caused by a wide range of conditions and tend to affect people increasingly in later adult life. Although spells of dizziness can be linked to serious neurological conditions they are often short term or relatively minor. Nevertheless dizziness does cause concern and can have a significant effect on people’s everyday lives. It is not surprising therefore that over the past few years dizziness and balance booklets have been requested more frequently than any of the other 25 booklets and factsheets produced by the Foundation.

The aim of the Brain and Spine Foundation's information series is to reduce the anxiety often felt by patients and their families by explaining neurological symptoms, conditions and investigations and providing links to other sources of support. The range is based on the latest medical and research evidence but is written primarily for patients and carers and uses simple language and illustration to help the communication of issues which can often be quite complex.

Brain and Spine Foundation publications are available as downloads or as readable documents on this website:

They are also available from the Brain and Spine Helpline which is operated by neuroscience nurses (Freephone 0808 808 1000).
