Coma and low awareness states: Family members and carers sought to help with research for documentary
10 November 2010
Are you a carer or family member of someone who has been in a coma, and who currently has minimal signs of awareness? Or do you work with patients and carers in this situation?
Rare Day, an independent production company, is developing a cross-media documentary project that will raise awareness about the lives of patients in long-term comatose or low awareness states. The aim is to reveal more about the challenges faced by this often forgotten population of patients and their families and carers, and provide a much-needed source of information and support for other people going through similar experiences.
The company would like to make contact with families and carers of patients who were in a coma in hospital, have now left intensive care and currently have minimal signs of awareness and are unable to communicate with their family. They would like to speak to families and carers about their experiences and the care and support that they and their loved one are receiving. Any information people are willing to share during this research phase (on a confidential basis) will be of huge value in helping to develop the shape of the final programme. As the project moves forward there will be no obligation to be involved further.
The company are also keen to talk to anyone who might help build up a more detailed picture of how many people in Britain are affected by this situation. They are trying to establish a more accurate picture of how many people in the UK are living in this condition, where they are, how they are being cared for and what support is in place for them and their families. They are therefore also keen to speak to people who may work with patients or carers affected by this situation to help inform their research and give them a more comprehensive overview.
