Brain and Spine Foundation certified a quality provider of health information under new Information Standard
27 January 2010
The Brain and Spine Foundation is one of the first organisations in the UK to be certified as a quality provider of health information, as part of The Information Standard, a new certification scheme supported by the Department of Health.
The Information Standard has been developed to support people in using health and social care information and, in doing so, help people to make confident, informed decisions about their health and social care. The Information Standard mark can help people make these decisions with confidence because it offers reassurance that health and social care information carrying the mark is from a reliable source.
Research has found that information available to people varies greatly in terms of quality, accessibility and availability.
The Information Standard can be part of helping people to:
- understand their health and care
- make effective decisions for themselves and their families
- help with uncertainty as to what information they should trust
Information producers like The Brain and Spine Foundation can use The Information Standard to improve the way in which they develop their information, leading to an overall improvement in the quality of information available to people.
Ken Walker, Chief Executive of the Brain and Spine Foundation, said: "The Foundation has always aimed to produce publications which help to summarise complex health information in a manner which is accessible for patients and their relatives. We are delighted to have this new quality indicator which should reassure individuals seeking information about their condition."
