20 years on: Patron Michael Watson looks back on the night he defied the odds and lived
21 September 2011
Today, Brain & Spine Foundation Patron Michael Watson looks back 20 years to the night he almost died.Watson, the former boxer, sustained serious head injuries during a super-middleweight fight with Chris Eubank on 21st September 1991.
"I didn't think he was going to make it. His recovery was a miracle," neurosurgeon Peter Hamlyn told the Mirror.
"You are talking about lifting a clot the size of a saucer of milk from his brain. He was more seriously ill than any other patient I have encountered - he was closer to being dead than anyone I've ever seen."
Peter Hamlyn set up the Brain and Spine Foundation shortly afterwards in 1992. And in 2003 despite being told he would never walk again, Michael Watson walked the London Marathon - a massive achievement which took him 6 days. This year he stood as an inspirational Team Captain to our 2011 London Marathon team.
