Head injury is responsible for considerable disability and fatality in children and young adults in the UK each year. Head injury causes damaging chemicals to be released into the brain. The results of this research showed that after head injury, protective chemicals are also released in small quantities into the brain that help to reduce brain swelling and repair damaged brain tissue. The researcher now plans to continue with this work to see if supplements of this type of chemical can improve brain protection after head injury.
