The search for stroke treatments has focused on dissolving blood clots or blocking brain cell death pathways. This project will examine the potential for exploiting the protective mechanisms that already exist in many cells and which may be used to reduce brain damage following stroke. Changes in the regulation of a steroid receptor in brain cells following exposure to adverse conditions appear to protect brain cells from subsequent death. The project will identify the mechanisms for this effect and will examine the regulation of this receptor in the human brain following a stroke.
