The cause of motor neurone disease (MND) and other related diseases is unknown. It is hoped that this research will lead to a greater understanding of why and how particular cells in the nervous system degenerate and the role that other cells have in ensuring their normal survival. Ultimately, this knowledge may lead to a treatment for MND and related diseases, either to slow down the progress of the diseases, or provide a cure.
