Stroke
A guide for patients and carers
What is a stroke?
A stroke occurs when there is a sudden interruption to the flow of blood to part of the brain. This is usually due to a blockage in an artery, which stops blood getting to part of the brain. This damages the brain, causing an ischaemic stroke. Less commonly, an artery bursts, which causes a bruise in the brain. This is called a cerebral haemorrhage or haemorrhagic stroke.
