Conclusion
There are a number of rare but potentially serious causes of headache which have to be ruled out whenever someone complaining of headache seeks medical advice, but the majority of people are found to have migraine or tension-type headache. Although these may be very disabling, they are not lifethreatening. However, they can seriously impact the quality of life if not managed properly. There are no long-term risks even if they are left untreated. In many cases the headache is being made much worse by worry about what might be causing it, and in this case medical reassurance is often all that is needed. Other affected people, though, will benefit from appropriate drug treatment taken whenever the headache occurs, or on a regular basis to prevent it.
