CT Scan

A guide for patients and carers

What happens during the scan?

You will be asked to lie on the scanner couch where you will be made as comfortable as possible. The position will vary depending on the part of the body that is being scanned. You should tell the staff if you are not comfortable as you will need to keep very still during the scan.
Once you are positioned correctly, the staff will leave the room to begin the scan. For the first scan the couch will move through the scanner. This produces a baseline picture from which all other scans are planned and the couch will be moved to the required start position. After this the table moves only a small amount each time a picture is taken.

The procedure is painless, however if you experience any problems you will be able to talk to staff as they can hear you on the intercom. There may be a short wait at the end of the scan while staff check to see if
the scans are satisfactory, or if any further pictures need to be taken.
