Surgeons attempt pioneering stem cell technique on spinal injuries

08 December 2005

Neurosurgeons at the National Hospital in London are to attempt a potentially revolutionary stem cell technique on motorbike accident victims who have sustained spinal injuries.

During the pioneering operations, which will take place early next year, severed nerves of young people will be treated using stem cell therapy. Head of spinal repair unit at University College London, Professor Geoffrey Raisman, believes the implanted stem cells will encourage the damaged nerve cells to regenerate and knit back together.
