Solicitors stray from the path, but get there in the end
David Chennells, a young qualified solicitor, collapsed while cycling to the office one morning. It turned out that he had suffered from a major bleed on the brain which left him with severe neurological damage.
Devotedly supported by his fiancée Louise, David has endured a prolonged period of treatment and rehabilitation and received a great deal of assistance from The Brain and Spine Foundation, which helps many of the 10 million people in the UK affected by brain and spine conditions.
When it came to deciding which organisation to make the focus of their fundraising activities in 2010, the charity which had helped David was the obvious choice for David's law firm, Attwaters.
With David very much in their minds, over 25 Attwaters colleagues and their families gathered bright and early in perfect walking weather on 24th April 2010, to tackle the 25 miles of The Forest Way, a footpath which begins at Hatfield Forest and ends in Epping Forest in Loughton. Madeline Seibert, one of the partners at Attwaters, was interviewed ‘live’ before the start by Ian Wyatt on the BBC Radio Essex breakfast programme.
Unfortunately the walk, which passes through two ancient forests, commons and open farmland isn’t easy to follow, leading to more than one detour! Amazingly all the walkers, including some young children joining the last section of the walk, kept their spirits high and managed to complete the course and hope to have raised over £2,000 for the Brain and Spine Foundation.

Attwaters' staff and their families take a well-earned break
Attwaters partner Madeline Seibert comments:
“It was very tough going but we got there in the end – we talked a lot about David on the route and I think it spurred us on to complete the course.
“The legal profession can be a tough working environment but we make sure that we prioritise empathy and compassion, whether we are dealing with clients who have suffered a misfortune or a colleague who is having a difficult time.”
