National Service Framework: Information Access Project

The National Service Framework (NSF) for people with Long-Term Neurological Conditions was published on 10 March 2005, and included requirements that health and social care professionals meet the information needs of service users and carers.
One of the ways the Brain and Spine Foundation will continue to influence the NSF is through the Information Access Project, which aims to help people with neurological and other long-term conditions access good quality and appropriate information.

The Foundation has been awarded a grant for two years by the Department of Health to produce a toolkit and protocols to support the implementation of the information components of the NSF. The project is supported by the Neurological Alliance and the Long Term Medical Conditions Alliance.

The aim of the project is to help people with neurological and other long-term conditions access good quality and appropriate information by assisting health, social care and other providers to implement evidenced-based standards of good practice in information and support services. By involving a large number of service users and their families in this process, the project will improve access to information services and contribute to improved quality of life for people with neurological conditions.

The outcome will be the production of a toolkit and protocols to assist health and social care professionals to provide good quality information. It will identify workable models of good practice a) for ensuring patient involvement and partnership in the process of defining information needs and accessing information and b) for professionals involved in providing information.
