National Service Framework

In 2001 Alan Milburn, then Secretary of State for Health, announced the development of a National Service Framework (NSF) for long term conditions with a focus on neurological disorders. NSFs set out national standards for a specific service or group with the aim of raising standards, reducing variations in services and improving health care.
In February 2004, Maggie Alexander, the Foundation's chief executive was invited to take up the chair of the Neurological Alliance NSF Interest Group, which coincided with an invitation from the Department of Health to join the NSF Implementation Group.

The launch of the NSF for long term conditions (10 March 2005) included requirements that health and social care professionals meet the information needs of service users and carers.
